I started running about six months ago. I thought it would be an easy way to drop some pounds, be outside more, and make me get away from the computer. On my first run, I was shocked to discover how out of shape I was. My perception of myself, up until that moment, was that I was reasonably fit for a gal approaching 50 -- no health issues, lots of energy, active enough...or so I thought. I was greatly disappointed to discover how difficult it was to run even a half a mile and it didn't do much for my ego to have a 70 year-old, white-haired lady pass by me while chatting effortlessly with her 20-something running partner. How do I get there from here I wondered.

I complained to a friend and avid runner. His response, "Patience, Grasshopper." From that point on, he became my much needed "running master" (RM from now on).  He recommended two things to start: buy good shoes and start slow (walk before you run, and run only every other day).

I took his advice and before long, I was running. I became stronger. I started to set goals, run regularly, and seek out new places to run. I make sure my running shoes are with me where ever I go. I am still not where I want to be in terms of time, distance or stamina, but I have patience and good shoes.

See "About the blog" for more words of wisdom from RM.
